Cragmere’s Armada,
Day of Races
Camp Gilwell (Scout Camp), Courtenay, BC
August 11 – 13, 2006

Our Armada patrols the waters of our Great Island – protecting us, keeping us safe!! – and brings in wealth and booty! All legally taken, of course! What were you thinking? WE have a letter of Marque. No, no, we are not the BC Ferry Corporation!

The Armada needs YOUR boat to help patrol the Shores of Insula Magna!! To sort the Flotsam from the Jetsam we are holding a race, so bring your Ship to:

We are also planning a little target practice in case our Shore is attacked!

Friday night

Set up camp. Gather in the Tavern for tall tales of tall ships or – short ‘ships, if that who happens to be who’s who in the gossip today.

Saturday

Heavy fighting: Round robin, Acclamation Tourney.

Rapier fighting: General Mayhem and Excitement. Resurrection Boarding Battle. When you die, you join the opposing boat. Barroom brawl. Bring funky "safe" secondaries ... rubber chickens, anyone? Winner is by general acclamation. Secondary awards for best death, and for best barroom secondary.

Boat Contest and Boat Race

Rules for making the Boats:

Boats may be constructed out of any materials; remember, they must float!
The boats do not need to be to scale, but should be 12" to 18" in length.
Boats must be of a period design.
Bhe race will be run in heats; the winner of each heat will advance to the finals.
Boats are not to be powered by any means other than sail.
Boat owners are responsible for the retrieval and removal of their own boat.
The contest is open to all ages.

Prizes will be awarded for

1: the best documentation.
2: the best looking boat
3:the overall winner of the race

WARNING – fast moving river: mind your children!!!
Bring swim clothes - or not, as you choose - so you can launch your boat.

Archery (depending on finding a TAM – if you are a TAM, please apply!)

Evening Tavern
Bring your Supper, Songs and Stories and any other Bardic presentations, with a Nautical theme, and join the festivities.

Sunday

Closing presentations

Site fee: $10.00 per adult; under 16 free; NMS will apply.
Day fee: $7.00 per adult; NMS will apply.
Dorm style cabin space (13 to a Dorm) is available for $5.00; bring your own mattress and bedding.

Directions

Take the New Highway (not the coast scenic drive) to the Piercy exit, number 127 (for those coming from Victoria, this is past the Courtenay exit); you can only turn one way.
Follow curvy road to Forbidden Plateau Rd. where you turn Right.
Go to (more curvy road) Duncan Bay Main Rd. and again turn Right.
Go about a city block to the Camp Gilwell Park entrance on the right.

NOTE: there are no stores within easy distance!

Site Rules

No pets
Period Containers only
Smoking, in your Camp and in designated area only
Fire - NO fires; BBQs are OK if you look after them; NO Tiki torches; NO open flame (candles must be enclosed and cared for).
No Vehicles on the Camping field (there are underground pipes)
Children MUST be accompanied at the River - it is fast moving and very dangerous for children or non-swimmers.
