With Vikings at Birka

Saturday, March 29, 2008
Doors open at 5 p.m. – close at midnight
8914 Clarkson Dr. – Saratoga Beach
Valhalla Hall
Cost: $10.00 per head; people under 18 free

This wonderful hall is set in Birka. If you google Birka, silkroad you will find many, many entries; here is one: ancientworlds.net/aw/Places/District/1008750

Birka was the end of the silk road and an amazing place in period – pretty much all our period.

Your persona ended up in Birka on a Caravan (thus no one has to make garb to fit a Viking Event!).

It is a pot luck – so we are eating at the market place. Please remember we have no (NO! None!) cooking facilities; you must bring things ready to eat or in a crockpot or whatever!

Contest

The best story that tells about why you are in Birka, and what trials and pitfalls, or wonderful things, have happened to you between where you started from and arriving here. This can be delivered by one person, or if you had several in your party, it can be delivered almost like a small play - with the 'party' all involved.

Event Steward is HL Meredith, 338-2891 or grey.house@shaw.ca

Saratoga Beach is located midway between Courtenay and Campbell River on Clarkson Drive via Miracle Beach Road off either Hwy 19 (exit 144, Hamm Rd and turn right onto 19A) or 19A.

From the Inland Highway (19), take the Hamm Rd exit (exit 144); at the Oceanside route (old Island Highway, 19A), turn left (north).

The first route is the longer and more scenic drive via Miracle Beach Drive. From the south, turn right onto Miracle Beach Drive, past Hampshire Rd, and left at Clarkson Ave. Don't go into the park on the right.

The second route is shorter with more corners (Halima likes this one). From the south, turn right onto Regent, right onto Saratoga Rd, right onto Henderson, left onto Eyre, right onto Clarkson.

From the old highway (Oceanside Route, Hwy 19), coming from the south, follow the above directions, taking the first route via Miracle Beach Drive, or the second via Regent.

From the old highway (Oceanside Route, Hwy 19), coming from the north, the second (and closest) route is just over the Oyster River, turn left onto Regent, right onto Saratoga Rd, right onto Henderson, left onto Eyre, right onto Clarkson. Or go further south to Miracle Beach Drive and turn left, and left again onto Clarkson.

Here's a map.
